History
Broomfield’s story begins in the late 1800s, in the wake of the Rocky Mountain gold rush, when a few farmers settled in the rolling fields. In 1885, Broomfield legend Adolf Zang purchased land just off the railroad line that ran from Denver to Boulder near what is now 120th Avenue and Olde Wadsworth. The spot became a new train stop known as Zang’s Spur, which Zang used to transport locally grown grain to his brewery in Denver. A little town grew around Zang’s Spur off the rail line when a few stores, grain elevators, a bank and a hotel were built. The Zang farm grew to 4,000 acres which eventually became the city that you see today.
When the Boulder Turnpike was constructed in the 1950s, a toll was created at the Broomfield intersection, and the town’s first paved road was put in. Developers bought the land and began to plan a suburban community with great access to Denver and Boulder. The first few neighborhoods began close to the intersection of the turnpike, complete with a school and a local shopping center. The population quickly grew to 6,000 in 1961 when the city was incorporated.
The town continued to grow, annexing plots of land in Boulder, Weld, Jefferson and Adams counties. Along with residential growth, Broomfield is home to many thriving businesses including: the Interlocken business center, SUN Microsystems, Level 3 and Flatirons Mall.
Broomfield became its own county in 2001. The city’s population now stands at over 66,000.
